About

Emerging markets have become dynamic drivers of global economic growth over the past two decades. Understanding these markets is crucial for business leaders, policymakers, and researchers. This report fills a critical gap between academic papers and short-term business briefs, assessing the current development status of emerging markets and providing tools to evaluate their mid- to long-term growth trajectories.

The research findings are intended to help entrepreneurs better navigate the landscape of the most dynamically evolving markets. In this capacity, the report can be used in the prepa- ration and implementation of joint projects, primarily initiatives aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between Russia and its partners in the BRICS, SCO, and EAEU.

The Emerging Markets Decoded (EMD) Index is a proprietary methodology developed by the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, used to assess the degree to which emerging markets have realized their economic potential. The 2024 iteration of the EMD Index covers 114 countries across 42 parameters, grouped into seven categories: capital, demography, social, economic systems structure, infrastructure, institutions, and risks.

The eight trends chapters explore key themes such as economy, politics, society, demography, urbanization, infrastructure, technology, and climate change, offering in-depth analysis and insights into their impact on emerging markets. Key takeaways include the impact of global volatility and recession risks, geopolitical and domestic flux, the diminishing demographic dividend, the accelerated digitalization due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rise of the global consumer class, and the critical role of cities in emerging market growth. The report also highlights the challenges and opportunities presented by the infrastructure gap and climate risks, emphasizing the potential for sustainable development and green transitions in emerging markets.

By examining these trends, the report aims to provide stakeholders with a nuanced understanding of emerging markets' growth trajectories and the factors influencing their development. The insights offered in this report can help stakeholders navigate the evolving landscape of emerging markets and make strategic decisions to leverage their economic potential.
