Russian-Singaporean Arctic Dialogue

The Arctic as a Global Transport Corridor. Sustainable Arctic Shipping.

About the event

Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, together with the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, is hosting the Russia-Singapore Arctic Dialogue on December 17, 2021 (in a hybrid online/offline format), supported by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore in Russia. The aim of the event is to establish an open dialogue between leading stakeholders in the Northern Sea Route project.

  • online

The Arctic has emerged as a global transport corridor. Singapore is one of the most important points on the world shipping map. As well as being one of the largest ports and a global logistics hub, it boasts special international status, advanced shipbuilding technology, and leading expertise in the management and development of maritime and shore-based infrastructure. Singapore's Arctic strategy is still at the development stage. At the same time, Singapore is keenly interested in sustainable development of shipping and the correlating laws, rules, and regulations. Singapore has the opportunity to occupy a worthwhile niche by its application to the Arctic of the very latest technology in infrastructure, shipbuilding and other sectors, as well as by funding Arctic investment projects, contributing its scientific and technical expertise, and by researching the effects of the loss of Arctic sea ice on climate change. In Singapore, the sector for designing offshore oil production facilities is, in global terms, highly competitive. There is also the technology for offshore drilling, including that suitable for extreme Arctic conditions.

Key Issues

  • Economic development of the Arctic and sustainable Arctic shipping: the potential for competitive performance in the context of climate challenges;
  • Technology and innovation for sustainable Arctic shipping: new types of vessels, alternative fuels, digital, telecommunications and aerospace technology and solutions;
  • Potential cooperation between Russian and Singaporean companies and research institutes in delivering a project for sustainable Arctic shipping for the Northern Sea Route.
