According to the conception of the SKOLKOVO's founders, the architectural design of the school's campus should incarnate an international and innovative character, and be inspired by Russian ideas that have won world-wide recognition. When analyzing projects suggested by some internationally known architectural firms, design functionality was considered a key requirement. The innovative and original conception of the British architect David Adjaye attracted the founders' attention and led them to choose Adjaye/Associates to develop the final version of the school's design. Bringing his ideas to life is expected to make the SKOLKOVO's campus an absolutely new phenomenon in modern architecture. When working on the project, Adjaye turned to world art history to try to find a prototype for his future creation that would correspond to the School's spirit as much as possible. Deeply impressed by the ideas of the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, whose works have had a great influence on the development of art world-wide, Adjaye proposed his own architectural vision of Malevich's masterpieces. The design of the SKOLKOVO's building, created in the spirit of Malevich's paintings, aims on the one hand to stress the idea of the interpenetration of Russian and World culture and, on the other, to show the innovative and even futuristic character of the school, which is also characteristic of the great Russian artist's works.
